It's Almost A Take That Christmas

Here's something we haven't seen in three years -- a Cliff Richard Christmas single that's actually a hit, chartwise. "21st Century Christmas", this week's #2 U.K. single, beats the #5 placing of Sir Cliff's December 2003 single, "Santa's List." Meanwhile, job well done on Cliff's face completely morphing into that of the beautiful Clay Aiken!

Alas, The Sir proved no match for week four of Take That's top run with "Patience", which can now at least boast the honor of being the Pre-Christmas #1. Here in the States, Beyoncé officially has the top song over the holiday, on the latest Billboard chart dated December 23rd. But we've gotta wait till next Sunday to find out whether the returning Brit boyband can stretch it for just seven more days.

Gwen Stefani manages to scrape up five more spots to #3 with "Wind It Up", which, even though some consider it to be more irritating than "Hollaback Girl," now has the ironic distinction of being her highest-charting British hit. And way, way down there at #21, looking up at us with sad eyes, it appears as if darling Lily Allen has suffered a major flop with "Littlest Things."

With Lily's singles charting lower and lower upon each release, perhaps the public has grown tired of her attention-wanting, trashy comments about other celebrities in the press. Or maybe it's just the fact that nobody likes a whore at Christmas.

The U.K. Top 10:

1. "Patience" - Take That *4 weeks*
2. "21st Century Christmas/Move It" - Cliff Richard *new*
3. "Wind It Up" - Gwen Stefani
4. "Truly Madly Deeply" - Cascada
5. "Boogie 2Nite" - Booty Luv
6. "Smack That" - Akon feat. Eminem
7. "You Know My Name" - Chris Cornell
8. "Tell Me" - P. Diddy feat. Christina Aguilera
9. "Bing Bang (Time To Dance)" - Lazy Town
10. "Fairytale Of New York" - The Pogues

That is a pretty hideous chart. It comes to something when Lazytown is one of the better records in the Top 10.

Respect to Cliff Richard. I'd be surprised if even 1% of his sales were downloads though.

sigh. i'm thrilled take that are number one doubly again but i am sure the behomoth that is leona xfactor will keep them from the festive chart topper. With a 4 year old kelly clarkson song. the girl can sing tho!

all these low positions for acts lately - killers, scissor sisters (Whose Dancing is now higher than Land?!) and now lily. And it's her prettiest song yet... and i'm not happy with Jamelia's massive drop. It makes me scared for McFly's placing next week...they could be charting in Matt Willis territory :(

I've never even heard of that Cliff Richard song before...

I have to second Paul's fears about McFly--and it's such a shame if they do, because, for anyone who doesn't own the album, it'll be one of the best deals/packages they'll get for a single this year--two excellent songs.

As for Matt...umm...at least it was top 20? Eep...I'm worried about his future.

Just goes to show that Matt Willis and Emma Bunton would have been far better off promoting their actual music rather than relying on reality shows to try and get them a hit.

I'm not a huge fan of McFly but I think Sorry's Not Good Enough is their best single by far. And it's probbaly the only time I'll ever say that a McFly single deserves to beat a Girls Aloud one.

Now if only Lily Allen would give us her retirement as an X-(tina)-mas present.

    And Cliff, bless!

did anyone even notice that Shakira moped in at 34.... sigh. Poor bitch. Her album would've flopped without a trace if it hadn't been for the awful Hips Don't Lie...and yet i notice girls aloud STILL outselling Sugababes in the album charts...

The behomoth that is leona xfactor will keep them from the festive chart topper. HCG Blue Drops allow your body to burn the fat for energy instead of the food you would typically consume.
