Music Junkie Digest: The So Sick Edition

As the title suggests, I'm at home all sniffly today, curled up with Miss Pussy and Cracker. The following may seem very stream-of-conscious, but lo! There be method in it!

D.C.-based XOLondon, having his finger firmly up the pulse, wrote about the lovely, forthcoming solo album from Sarah Nixey earlier in the week (out in February). Sometimes when you get these promos, they end up being frisbeed out the window. But the Black Box Recorder vocalist's Sing, Memory very well may top BBR's last record, 2003's Passionoia, in all it's blipping and bleeping synth-squiggly glory! Click below to stream a radio mix of "Strangelove" not available on the LP, plus a few other tracks. And if you don't own Passionoia, buy or download it for "Andrew Ridgeley" alone. And "British Racing Green." And "These Are The Things."

beautiful oblivion:

when i'm here with you:

Now, Sarah, whose birthday is six days away, was born in Dorset, England. Also born in Dorset is Russ Spencer, the blond boy from short-lived (but fantastic) dancing pop four-piece, Scooch!

Myself, I'm finding it hard to believe that January will be seven years since their second single, the cheesy, toe-tappingly glorious "More Than I Needed To Know," became their one and only U.K. Top 10 hit. It reached #5, and two more singles were issued before the band were history in late 2000.

God bless 'em in all their faux-Steps tomfoolery. This past spring, Russ starred on Boys Will Be Girls, a UK reality show where failed male pop stars had to convincingly form a girl group. One of his costars was Martin Rycroft, the butt-ugly girl from Fast Food Rockers (right). Not sure why they had a real girl in the band, but anyway... the gals were called The Honeytraps, and here's the video for their cover of A Flock Of Seagulls' "Wishing (If I Had A Photograph)." How 'bout that "Somebody Told Me"-esque opening!

On a final note, in the Wikipedia entry for The Honeytraps, it states that Martin was apparently bartending post-Fast Food Rockers, and she's now bartending again, post-Honeytraps.

It's never easy...

I really like the production on that; too bad it was wasted on a novelty tv band! Oh well... And PS, no, they weren't fooling anyone in that video.

Carnt wait to hear the new Nixey stuff.

that whole girl band thing was just horrif. What even was the point of it other than to make people look like twats (almost literally then!) Still a bit of scooch is always good.

That song is far better than it has any right to be really. I don't know what's more degrading though - appearing on Boys Will Be Girls or presenting one of those rip-off merchant "quiz" shows on Channel 5 at 2am.

Glad you added the new Nixey stuff. It's reminding me a bit of Goldfrapp, and that's a-ok. Beautiful Oblivion has a nice bassline thing going on there.

I remember my mom making a tape off the radio back in '83, and the original A Flock Of Seagulls version was on it. What a great song that was/is. The Nixey album's great! Will bring back to PA for the holidays, for the great MoogaBoo/J'ason summit.
