The Year In #1s

Here's the wrap-up of singles that topped both the American and British charts in 2006. I'm taking the liberty of calling Leona Lewis as the final #1 in England, even though the chart isn't officially published till Sunday. It's probably safe to say that "SexyBack," the song that spent the most weeks at the top in the U.S., became the official pop culture catchphrase of the year. Justin Timberlake also edged Beyoncé out by one week with the most weeks at #1 here.

Both Beyoncé and Justin were the only two artists to officially have two singles hit the top in the States in '06, although Timbaland featured on two singles as well -- and if we're being technical, he actually spent the most time at the top if you add in his appearance on both "SexyBack" and "Promiscuous." McFly were the only ones to rack up two singles at the top of the U.K. chart, while Gnarls Barkley spent the most time (9 weeks) at #1 there.

On a final note, "SexyBack," "So Sick" and "Hips Don't Lie" were the only three singles to peak at the top in both countries in 2006.

The inexplicable success of Bouncey's lowest moment (Check On My Big Booty) grosses me out! Urgh! Americans have no taste!

Jesus, that was a big drop! All the way to #20-something or other. Didn't you download the song 57 more times this week like a real fan would, Paul?
