Pop Goes My Heart

"Did you ever hear of the band Pop!" Hugh Grant asks Drew Barrymore in the trailer for the upcoming film, Music And Lyrics...

Meanwhile, how great is that "Pop Goes My Heart" song? They showed this preview before Dreamgirls, which I went with my mom to see on Saturday, and I almost choked on my hot chocolate, since I thought they were talking about the real group Pop! -- you know, the failed U.K. dance/pop band that even had the "!" after their name. (Click here to read the Chart Rigger postmortem on Pop!).

Well, okay, that's not true. I'd heard of Music And Lyrics in the summer, when Billboard did a story about how Martin Fry, singer from real '80s pop act ABC, was the vocal coach for Hugh Grant on the set of the film.

Golly, I had the 45s for three ABC singles when I was a kid: "Poison Arrow," "Be Near Me" and this one:

Music And Lyrics is out in the U.K. February 9 and the U.S. February 14.

Watching this video reminds me of the first time I actually saw it - probably 15 years after it was initially popular. I recall thinking - "My God! I've seen porn with better production values!"

But the song is certainly top notch.

Well, I was 8 in 1982 when I first saw the video on MTV... I remember cutting a picture of Mr. Hyde out of Famous Monsters magazine and writing "The Look Of Love" over top it. I've always been a sick bastard.

High Grunt is getting very post-modernist in the scripts he's taking on isnt he? First its American Idol with American Dreamz and now its Vh1's Band Reunited/MtV's Totally Scott Lee. Looks awful anyway. Can't wait to see it though.

Paul, we haven't been 21 since Sub Sub, Deuce and Corona were relevant, I'm afraid. Christ, even Drew Barrymore is somehow younger than us -- I looked it up, she's only 30!!

Rob... High Grunt. Ha! I forgot he was in American Dreamz. I'm totally seeing this new one, though. I love slasher horror movies.

I have not seen the film yet, but I was lucky enough to be working in the entertainment press in Boston on the night that "Dreamgirls" opened for out-of-town tryouts. So I got to see/hear Jennifer Holliday sing that amazing song live for the first time! So many years later, I still remember the power of that performance. I am looking forward to hearing Jennifer Hudson in the film.

I am going to see this movie, regardless of what anyone says. Romantic comedy centered around pop music? I'm there! I hadn't seen that particular version of the preview before, though, and it sort of actually explains what it's about--all I really got out of the other ones was Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant, who was making some sort of comeback, writing lyrics together.

(Of course, that's what I said about American Dreamz--"movie about an Idol-esque show? I have to see that!"--and I still haven't.)
