The Year In Pop So Far

Here's a sobering thought: 2007 is halfway over as of Friday, which means we'll all be skidding toward Christmas by the weekend.

But let's concentrate on happy thoughts, such as the diverse range of pop music that we all illegally downloaded during the first half of the year. January and February actually seemed pretty bleak, especially when Mika and Dreamgirls were the only broads making headlines.

On the heels of Take That's major British comeback -- the resulting album from which is still selling by the bucketload after seven months -- the Spice Girls reunion went from rumor to... really strong rumor. Meanwhile, hopefully that won't all go the way of the All Saints reunion, which imploded within three months during the winter.

In late March I touted Hilary Duff's Dignity as being the first great pop album of 2007. Proving the level of influence D'luv weilds over the masses, Dignity is currently resting at the soaring heights of #82 on the Billboard album chart in its ninth week of release.

And so far, out of Mika, Lily Allen, Corinne Bailey Rae and The Feeling, the clear leader of the British Invasion this year is Amy Winehouse, who's managed a breakout single with "Rehab," a Top 10 album and a cover story in Rolling Stone. James Blunt will be handing over the crown in a BBC-televised ceremony.

Let's also not forget these following singles, some of which no doubt made an impression on all our impulsive, downloading ways this year.

Or maybe that was just me.

i don't even know how the UK's 7th, 8th and current number ones of the year goes (what horrible grammar i have). But any year that has Shine at the top is ok by me. May i just say the world of pop is a better place for having some chart rigger in it!

Aw, thanks, Pablo. You may stand alone in that assessment, but it's a nice thought :-)
