Throwback: "Open Your Mind"

Occasionally D'luv likes to pop out his dentures, remove the bifocals and reminisce about the random jams from the '90s that shaped dance music at the time. A few weeks back it was "7 Ways To Love," and this week we turn to Usura (or U.S.U.R.A. as they're sometimes credited) and "Open Your Mind." An Italian dance trio licensed to the Deconstruction label, Wikipedia mentions Usura were named after one of the members' mothers, Ursula. The act saw "Open Your Mind" hit #7 on the U.K. singles chart in early 1993.

The vocal sample the song is built around comes from the 1990 Schwarzenegger flick Total Recall. But which is sexier -- the critter in the movie that says the line, or Margaret Thatcher in the music video?

Unfortunately, there's nary a tale of gooned-out D'luv toe-up in an abandoned warehouse in the suburbs while this played back in the day -- I actually didn't discover it till 2002, when a Deconstruction compilation jumped out at me in a used record store. Better late than never!

"Open Your Mind" is available on the 2006 U.K. Hitman And Her compilation.

I used to dance to this jizz-am back at Pegasus! It's second only to "Damn! I Wish I Was Your Lover!" to drag-synch to!!

That first sentence led me to think there was something racy ahead. Alas no.

Just to say that this song defined many a school disco boogie throw-downs when I was ten or eleven. If its ever played on the dancefloor now I'm taken back to my pre-teen attempts of dancing and trying to look cool. Which always failed.

Rave-tastic! I'll make up for D'luv then as I had many a gooned out night dancing to this one back in my warehouse days.

    George, didn't we bump?

XO, racy? Who do you think I am -- Morrissey?

RobP, I couldn't dance as a kid, either, but turned into quite the Jason Orange in my late teens. Yeah, I've since lost it, but that's what love can do.

    OYO, little E tab/glowstick monkey!

    Anonymous, didn't we bump?

Why am I not surprised you love this song D'luv? Here's the thing, I was a kid when this came out, a kid who was being heavily influenced music wise by the sounds his cool aunty was listening to. She got into dance in a BIIIIIG way and I lapped that shit up.

About 3 years ago I was asked to write up my top 40 favourite dance tracks of all time for a magazine. That track was number #2. The "Tatata Remix" is the absolute fucking BOMB (do you have it? If you do not, you need to have it. Not much change to the original, except there are homotastic "TA-TA-TA-TA"s before the "AWWW"s.) - as is the follow up single "Sweat."

And what I meant to say was, if you are without that remix, I will send it your way.

I hadn't heard this one before but it sounds quite a bit like the Utah Saints cover of Simple Mind's "New Gold Dream 81, 82, 83, 84". I do love the video with all those state of the art early 90s things going on like computer graphics and morphing. Fantastic stuff.
