Who Needs American Idol: Apple Shaping Up To Be The Real Hitmaker

Hey, cats -- it's my birthday, and now I'm finally old enough to vote and buy porn! Yippee! Moving on, my fellow chart-watchers-in-arms may have caught the fact that Apple sent four artists into the Top 10 of Billboard's Hot 100 over the past six months. I'm calling them the Dames Of iTunes.

The latest such Dame is French-Israeli Yael Naïm, whose "New Soul" features in commercials for the new MacBook Air laptop. "New Soul" subsequently topped the iTunes download chart, and this week enters the Hot 100 at #9. Billboard notes that "New Soul" scored 135,000 paid downloads last week. Here's the video:

That's nice. Too bad it sounds just like all the other Dames' tunes -- Feist's "1 2 3 4," Colbie Caillat's "Bubbly" and Sara Bareilles' "Love Song." These broads were all touted by Apple over the past year, usually as the iTunes "Free Download Of The Week." It remains to be seen if any of them can fend off the seductive call of the One Hit Wonder.

Miley Cyrus' "See You Again" jumps up from #28 to #17, becoming the biggest hit from either her or her be-wigged alter ego. As it should. That's a damn fine tune. That part after the middle eight where the music drops out and then the kicky drum comes back in is so good it just makes me wanna take Miley over my knee and spank her.

Meanwhile, so much for Jesus. Natasha Bedingfield's Pocketful Of Sunshine debuted at #3 on the album chart last week, but now plunges to #21. And after edging oh-so-close to having a second Top 10 hit, "Love Like This" falls from #11 to #24.

The U.S. Top 10:

1. "Low" - Flo Rida feat. T-Pain *7 weeks*
2. "With You" - Chris Brown
3. "Don't Stop The Music" - Rihanna *airplay gainer*
4. "Apologize" - Timbaland feat. OneRepublic
5. "No One" - Alicia Keys
6. "Love Song" - Sara Bareilles
7. "Clumsy" - Fergie
8. "Sensual Seduction" - Snoop Dogg
9. "New Soul" - Yael Naïm *new*
10. "Take You There" - Sean Kingston

Happy B'day, Robbie!! Must be nice being 18 again! Hell, if I can be 21 again, then why not? :)

I noticed earlier today how "New Soul" jumped outta nowhere into the top 10. After I rolled my eyes, it dawned on me where i had heard it before. I think you are on to something with the "dames of itunes" idea. Yael sounds very feisty, so it's no surprise to me that she got the next Mac commerical. :) If the shit ain't broke, why fix it, eh Steve Jobs?

I hate that Yael cunt - I'm so sick of these dreary bitches hitching a ride to the top of the charts on the back of some shitty commercial. No wonder classy divas like Heidi Montag are left behind...

    Oh happy birthday!

Let's not forget that "Teardrops on My Guitar" dame. She has the same milquetoast sound as the others, even if she wasn't turned out by Apple.

And who forgot to mail in Natasha's payola payment on time?

Harry Birthday D'Luvvley! I'd no idea you were 18 already, and here I was hoping you'd be featured on an episode of MTV's "My Sweet 16"!

P.S. Saw Robyn live here in SF last night. Good stuff!
