Katy Perry Tops The Chart, But Can She Finger Her Way To A Lasting Career?

See, America really is ready for gay marriage! Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl" has topped the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart, knocking off the one-week reign of Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" (both of which are on the Capitol label).

But isn't there kind of a nagging feeling of one-hit wonderism surrounding Sapphic Katy? "I Kissed A Girl" (not to mention her pre-major label tune, "Ur So Gay") just smacks of novelty choon, a la Jill Sobule's own "I Kissed A Girl" from 1995.

Here's the Fabio-starring vid for the latter:

(True story: D'luv brought food to Jill Sobule in 1997 when he was a room service waiter at the Pittsburgh Doubletree Hotel. Classy broad. Good tipper.)

So what do we think? Will Katy Perry skyrocket after the success of her first #1 single and enjoy an Avril-like career, or will she be sent down Washed-Up Hooker Lane, a trail originally blazed by Martika, Alannah Myles and Sinead O'Connor? (Lisa Loeb and Karyn White used to live there, too, but they luckily sold their properties when the market was still good.)

Elsewhere, Miley Cyrus matches the #10 peak of "See You Again" this week with "7 Things," which flies up from #70. Camp Rock starlet Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas have the Hot Shot Debut at #11 with "This Is Me," and Rihanna's groovy, Eiffel 65-esque "Disturbia" debuts at #18.

The U.S. Top 10:

1. "I Kissed A Girl" - Katy Perry *1 week*
2. "Lollipop" - Lil Wayne Feat. Static Major
3. "Bleeding Love" - Leona Lewis
4. "Take A Bow" - Rihanna
5. "Pocketful Of Sunshine" - Natasha Bedingfield
6. "Viva La Vida'" - Coldplay
7. "Forever" - Chris Brown
8. "Push It Baby, Part 2" - Plies Feat. Ne-Yo
9. "When I Grow Up" - Pussycat Dolls
10. "7 Things" - Miley Cyrus *sales gainer*

I'm so glad YOU moved away from Washed-up Hooker Lane too, D'luvzy. I'd say you've come up in the world since your Doubletree days, yes?

I, too, am wondering how many one- hit wonder compilations "I Kissed A Girl" will be on in a few years. Novelty artist, fer shure.

I've come around on Disturbia in a big way...LOVE that song. PCD, however, are still crap, and I don't get. The sad thing about "Kissed" is that it now has that distinction of being the 1000th #1 of the rock era. Nothing says pop death like a crappy novelty song with a fun hook.

BTW, be afraid...among the top 5 most added this week is Menudo. First NKOTB, then this? What's next? Bay City Rollers?
