David Archuleta Vs. David Cook...Who Got F***ed In The End?

Poor Taylor Swift. "Change" debuting at #10 on Billboard's Hot 100 would have been quite a feat any other week. Unfortunately for the blonde truckstop hooker, David Archuleta's "Crush" is the real story, landing at #2 in its first appearance on the chart.

But here's where it's open to interpretation as to who gets bragging rights. After David Cook was coronated the winner of American Idol, "The Time Of My Life" entered the Hot 100 at #3. So, technically one position below Idol runner-up Archuleta's "Crush." (My post that week was lovingly titled "I Wouldn't F*** This Chart With David Archuleta's D***.")

However, "The Time Of My Life" had sales of 236,000 in its first week, while "Crush" sold only about 166,000. So in summation, David Archuleta has a nice mouth. Er, voice! Voice. What? 17? Quick, look, it's Baby Queen on the set of the "Crush" video shoot from yesterday!

Chris Brown's 2008 Olympics-themed single "Dreamer" also makes a classy debut, at #16. Initially I was smitten with the track, but I'll admit I haven't listened to it much since last week. As you know, with D'luv, one day you're on his playlist. And the next, you're out.

Elsewhere, Estelle's "American Boy" is hovering at #11, last year's Idol winner Jordin Sparks is up to #21 with "One Step At A Time" and Leona Lewis hauls her candy up five positions to #33 with "Better In Time."

Keep it sexy.

The U.S. Top 10:

1. "Disturbia" - Rihanna *2 weeks*
2. "Crush" - David Archuleta *new* *hot shot debut*
3.
"Forever" - Chris Brown
4. "I Kissed A Girl" - Katy Perry
5. "Viva La Vida'" - Coldplay
6. "Paper Planes'" - M.I.A
7. "Dangerous" - Kardinal Offishall Feat. Akon
8. "Take A Bow" - Rihanna
9. "Closer'" - Ne-Yo
10. "Change" - Taylor Swift *new*

American Idol used to rack up #1's on an annual basis. I wonder why they are having a harder time doing that now.

Oh my. people really falling that archie track! I'm usually the first to fall for it but i'm strangely aloof. Chris Brown on the other hand - that track is growing on me like David Archie's pantline at a mormon missionary reunion...

David Cook's AI single may have only made #3, but he did set a record for the sheer number on entries he had on the chart that first week, which IIRC were last duplicated by the Beatles in the 60s. I think the real test will be how David's first "real" single does.

hun*ter, I have noticed that what David Cook and Jordin Sparks' AI singles have in common (besides the fact that they both did not hit #1) is that both were only released digitally. Obviously in this day and age it shouldn't be a problem for a digital-only single to hit #1, but since so many AI fans are very young or very old, I think not have a presence in the shops negatively impacted sales.

Rather than coming off as a raving Cookie or something, I'm just going to say "well done" to Archie, and leave it at that.

(Although they're not equal achievements...razzin' frazzin')

The top 4 songs are WAY too much alike. I'm tellin' you that there's going to be a backlash soon.

Hun*ter S Thompson, what Mary said is probably very true. Also, the fact that David Cook's sold far more downloads than Archuleta's might have to do with the fact that "The Time Of My Life" was released right after the Idol finale, so all that trash was still in people's minds.

I think the fact that DC's single is still in the Top 40 three months later is a testament to his popularity. Most of the other winners of the show saw their singles fall out of the chart within a few weeks.

Paul, while you vile, filthy heretic! Jesus will be taking the wheel from here. (and did you notice we have comments from John, Paul and Mary here? all we need a nun to slap my wrists...preferably one in a barbed-wire thong.)

John, I think the Top 4 songs are a backlash against the crap that's been shilled to us for the past 7 years.
