Lady GaGa Dances To #1

The kiddies with their iTunes cards they got for Christmas have spoken; after previously topping the charts in Canada and Australia, Lady GaGa finally straddles the peak of Billboard's Hot 100 here in the States, nearly a year after the single was released.

Christina Aguilera is probably smashing the fine China right now. Both Britney Spears and Lady GaGa within three months...?

Last week "Just Dance" scored 419,000 paid digital downloads, making it the second most-downloaded track in a single week (after Flo Rida's "Low," from last January). As well, GaGa's full-length set The Fame jumps from #58 to #26 on the Top 200 Albums chart.

Golly, this is like the week after Christmas in 1991, when all the youngsters returned their Michael Jackson Dangerous CDs they got as gifts and exchanged them for Nirvana's Nevermind—which then unseated Jackson from #1.

Only this time Michael Jackson is Beyoncé. Although Michael probably has a more spectacular vagina...

Meanwhile, Lady GaGa is currently opening for the Pussycat Dolls on their European tour. How much longer till you think that bill flips around?

The U.S. Top 10:

1. "Just Dance" - Lady GaGa feat. Colby O'Donis *1 week*
2. "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" - Beyoncé
3. "Live Your Life" - T.I. feat. Rihanna
4. "Love Story" - Taylor Swift *airplay gainer*
5. "Heartless" - Kanye West
6. "Hot N Cold" - Katy Perry
7. "I'm Yours" - Jason Mraz
8. "Womanizer" - Britney Spears
9. "Let It Rock" - Kevin Rudolf
10. "Love Lockdown" - Kanye West

WOW. This is probably the whitest that the US Top 10 has looked since... 2001?

Back in 2003-2005 I never would have predicted Britney Spears or someone like Lady Gaga would ever hit #1 in America again. Hip-hop, rap, and R&B can't dominate like they used to now that digital sales make up such a big part of the Hot 100.

America, face it and get ready: 2009 is the year that the girlie-electro-pop phenomenon is about to take over, even possibly to scary Macarena levels.
I say by summer months we should be seeing the first airings of either Coke, Wrigley's or Target commercials featuring either Ms. Ga-Ga, or Ladyhawke or La Roux.
    Tick tock, tick tock....
