I'm Being Taken Over By 'The Fear'

Oh, God. Why me? Why now? How? HOW?

The danger started a couple months ago when I first heard Lily Allen's "The Fear." Uh oh, I thought. Lily's annoying voice is overshadowed by all the pretty pop production...this isn't good!

And then there's the pretty video, sort of a better, three-minute version of Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette, minus the bad stuff (Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman, Sofia Coppola, the movie itself, etc.).

Surely all the songs on the It's Not Me, It's You album couldn't be as good? Uh, oh. They are! "22" sounds like The Beatles meets old school Elton John? "Who'd Have Known" steals from Take That's "Shine"? Well, Lily, if you're gonna rip 'em off, rip 'em off classy!

Anyway, one iTunes birthday gift card later, and I've totally Lily'd up my life. And I can't stop listening. For those who were around these parts when Allen's first album came out three years back, you'll know what a complete turnaround this is for D'luv.

But oh, well. It's not my fault. It's how I'm programmed to function.

I loved "The Fear" so I checked out the rest of that EP. Most of it sounded just like her old stuff: bad singing and overly arch arrangements with more self-referential lyrics than the Robbie Williams songbook. BUT... if you say it's good, I'll check out the full album....

Yes! Up until a few days ago, I would have said this was my favorite album of the year so far. It's fantastic. There are one or two tracks I don't return to that often, but the rest is all really well-done.

Welcome to the dark side, D'luv.

I have also been won over based on "The Fear", and while I like the new CD, at the heart of each track, it's the same song, just with different production.

you know i once called her d'luvs whore in a post. i just never dreamed that would come true :)

Yep, I was holding off too, but my friends were raving about it so I d/led it...

It's better than Kelly Clarkson's new one, and that one is pretty good (if very narrow in sound)

Her cockney ish bugs after a while, but the songs are so poptastic and I looove "Fag Hag" and Fxxx You - even if that last one is a bit late.

What is Poster Girl's new favorite? I need to check her blog.

D'luv, next time just agree with XO from the start and you won't waste anyone's time. Next I plan to make you into a Charlotte Gainsbourg fan.

XO, oh, you should talk with numbfromdrugs...he's a big fan of Charlotte, Serge, and all things French pop.

Joshua, there's a song called "Fag Hag"??

Paul, I feel like Satan's disciple now.

John, see, I've not found that. But then again, I've only listened through three times.

PG, yes, so cryptic...I must go back and find what's your new favorite. Don't tell me you've fallen for Morrissey now....

Moog, it's worth checking out! I'm telling you, it's that video that sold me on the whole thing...that damn, damn video.

Fag Hag and Kabul Shit are both B-sides. Great ones at that!

YAY YAY YAY...I have waited for this day...oh, D'luv, you had me really questioning my tastes when I fell for her last disc...somewhere in my heart, though, I knew I (and apparently many others were right or, if you'd prefer, so wrong we'd circled all the way around to right)...welcome to the fold!

I am by no means a Lily Allen fan but "The Fear" and "Everyone's at it" off the new album are good tracks. My guess is the pretty pop production worked well.

Chile, I't s alright because I felt the same about Lily until I gave the album a thorough listen. It's D to the Luvly. My favourite album of the year. Actually scratch. Lily's throne has just been usurped by K-Clark.

    Fag Hag! A+

I want to do a drag performance to this song

Joshua, I'm guessing you'd do a very expert one, at that!

Will, girl, Joshua's earlier comment tends to disagree with you on the Kelly Clarkson being better.

RadioCB, yeah, pretty production gets me ever time, I'm afraid.

Shaun, I guess at least I'm not alone in my shame! I honestly didn't think this scandalous admission would spark such a reaction from everyone!

Anonymous, thanks! Will check them out, then!
