Mariah Carey Plays It Safe, Covers Foreigner For Her Next Single

Well, not only is the track "I Want To Know What Love Is" off Mariah Carey's upcoming album indeed a cover of the #1 Foreigner snoozefest hit, it's also apparently going to be her next single, says the Los Angeles Times' Pop & Hiss blog.

The Foreigner ballad was first released in late 1984 and hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1985. It was also #1 in Sweden and the U.K. Meanwhile, did anyone at the time realize that both Jennifer Holliday and the F-ing Thompson Twins sing backup on it? Maybe Mimi can get Jennifer Hudson and La Roux to do background vocals on her version!

Anyway, here's what the L.A. Times has to say:

"If anything, tackling a well-known power ballad seems like a safe choice. It's a comfortable fall-back plan after 'Obsessed' performed well, but did far from blockbuster numbers. It will undoubtedly be a hit, but it's giving me more reason to fear Imperfect Angel. The sort-of-real/sort-of-not feud with Eminem seemed largely a ploy to keep Carey in the headlines, and covering Foreigner seems just as calculated to steer Carey back onto familiar ground."

And here's Foreigner's original version of "I Want To Know What Love Is":

Tina Arena's cover of it is better.

She actually got Foreigner founder Mick Jones to sing with her on it (you hear him come in towards the end of the song) and write a few extra lyrics for the cover. It's really really good. :)

I think Wynonna(Judd)'s cover is the all-time best. I'll have to be convinced to give Mimi's version of a song I kinda hate is worth a listen!

i want to run away from it yet cannot bear to do so... what a conundrum..

Lets not forget Dame Shirley Bassey has covered this as well - well...not well actually.
So is this Mimi covering Shirley?

Oh Mimi - just find and sing some great original songs please.

I agree - the Wynonna version is the best cover of that song I have heard. It also was remixed a la "Sing" (although not as well).

NO NO NO cunts! The best version is by Terri Symon, as produced by Satoshi Tomiie. Track it down bitches!

Also... huge pet peeve of mine: All ballads are not "power ballads" by default. Why is it that everybody calls any ballad a power ballad?

Power ballad = Heavy metal ballad

    Get it together, L.A. Times.

I'm excited for this. I liked her cover of "Bringin on the Heartache". Of course it will be Pro Tools'd to hell, but it works.

The name of this blog post should have been Mariah Carey plays "boring". I think Foreigner was a great band and they did have some great ballads but "I want to know what love is' definitely was not one of them. It is as dull today as it was the first time I heard it ages ago. Frankly, this idea of popstars trying to dish out an album every year (because the promotion on their previous album was ill-conceived) is pretty sad. This, in my opinion, will be the nail in the coffin for the "Imperfect angel" album.
