Owl City = An Artist Truly Deserving Of A Top 40 Hit. Alicia Keys? Not So Much

One jam that's been exciting to watch crawl its way to success over the past couple months is one-man electronic band Owl City's "Fireflies."

Highly reminiscent of The Postal Service—ah, 2004—Owl City sees "Fireflies" bust into the Top 40 this week after jumping from #46 to #24.

Here's the vid:

As a matter of fact, I thought Owl City was the Postal Service at first. But since we're not likely to get another album out of them, you really won't be disappointed picking up the full Ocean Eyes album—which I promise is chock-full of similarly-dreamy choons.

Elsewhere, the Black Eyed Peas have now lodged 26 weeks at #1 in a row—i.e., an entire half a year. Equally dire, Alicia Keys—aka the most boring pop star this planet has ever had to endure in all of recorded history—debuts at #61 with her latest dirge, "Doesn't Mean Anything."

I wrote this in my d'luvvly review of that trash on the Pop Trash Addicts Pop Panel this past week:
"Talk about someone who's made a little go a long way. This broad's voice and same-y piano tinkling are so mediocre, grating and forgettable, I can't believe how people still buy into Clive Davis' trumped-up hype for her. Waste of time. 0/5"
Put that in your diary, baby.

The U.S. Top 10:

1. "I Gotta Feeling" - The Black Eyed Peas *14 weeks*
2. "Down" - Jay Sean feat. Lil Wayne
3. "Party In The U.S.A." - Miley Cyrus
4. "Run This Town" - Jay-Z feat. Rihanna and Kanye West
5. "Watcha Say" - Jason DeRulo
6. "You Belong With Me" - Taylor Swift
7. "Paparazzi" - Lady GaGa
8. "Use Somebody" - Kings Of Leon
9. "Obsessed" - Mariah Carey
10. "Empire State Of Mind" - Jay-Z feat. Alicia Keys

Wow, Owl City is doing that well? Not that I'm complaining, but I'm surprised!

Lady, I love Owl City. Are you going to see them at the Troubador?

i'd sort of ignored Owl City but your Postal Service (loved them) comparison has convinced me to check them out :) I quite like Alesha's latest. Oh. The other Alicia! Well I like that too...

In my opinion, there are only two songs on this "top" 10 that even deserve a second listen let alone a chart position, and one of them ain't from the BEP's.

I have a love/hate thing with them, but this year's chart toppers are oddly disjointed, and ahem, boring. Sorry guys, but try as she might, Fergie can't carry the song if you don't let her. Oh, and honestly, no one cares about the irrelevant two (I hesitate to say three?) of you.

That said, I was a VIP attendee, la-di-da, at the NFL pregame show, and (she was) awesome live. At the very least, I am grateful they realized that as a group act "don't funk with my heart" rocks harder than well, anything on "the END".

    PG, Owl City for President!

Anonymous, I am NOW! You going?

Paul, don't ignore! Get the whole album. But ignore Alicia, definitely.

Michele, that was the most thoughtful thing I've ever read on BEP...well, other than when I said Fergie should be strapped to a metal gurney and wheeled into a tank of piranha.
