The UK Chart This Week Needs A Little More Calvin Harris, A Little Less Scouting For Girls

On this week's exciting new UK singles chart, we have not a new entry within the Top 10. But there's so much more going on, such as—uh, well. Hmmm.

Why don't we instead look at the Top 10 from one year ago this week, first:

The U.K. Top 10 this week in 2009:

1. "I'm Not Alone" - Calvin Harris *1 week*
"Poker Face" - Lady GaGa
"Jai Ho'" - Ar Rahman feat. Pussycat Dolls
"In For The Kill'" - La Roux
5. "Don't Upset The Rhythm (Go Baby Go)" - The Noisettes
6. "Love Sex Magic" - Ciara feat. Justin Timberlake
7. "Halo" - Beyonce
8. "Shake It" - Metro Station
"Right Round" - Flo Rida feat. Kesha
"Love Story'" - Taylor Swift

Golly, that's like 15 times more exciting (save for the Taylor Swift and Ciara/Timberlake garbage cluttering things up), no?

Anyway, back to this week. On the album chart, Lady Gaga's The Fame knocks Boyzone's Brother off the top, and, well, I'm off to go read a book now.

The U.K. Top 10:

1. "This Ain't A Love Song" - Scouting For Girls *2 weeks*
2. "OMG" - Usher feat. Will.i.am
3. "She Said" - Plan B
4. "Telephone" - Lady Gaga feat. Beyonce
5. "Pass Out" - Tinie Tempah
6. "Carry Out" - Timbaland feat. Justin Timberlake
7. "Hot" - Inna
8. "Rude Boy" - Rihanna
9. "Baby" - Justin Bieber
10. "Parachute" - Cheryl Cole

i've warmed to Plan B quite a lot actually recently. Oh and i quite like SFG but only because I literally bumped into the lead singer in London, who is very cute, and he went "oh excuse me" in such a charming manner that I dribbled down his trousers.

2009 was a simpler, more innocent time...JustinE Bieber was still but a zygote (or a newborn at most), and Taylor Swift seemed like the little country songstress who could (not the repetitive country diva who could and then did and was then crammed down our throats relentlessly for a year and then stole Lady Gaga's grammy's (what's the plural of "grammy" anyway -- I know the apostrophe isn't right, but I can't bring myself to go with "grammies")).

Crucially, 2009 also seemed like it really should have been the start of a long and successful career (i.e. greater than 6 months) for the Noisettes. Such is life.

It's also mildly ridiculous that it's this song which has got Scouting for Girls to number 1. Like them or not, their previous singles (I'm thinking specifically of "It's Not About You" are much stronger and are at least a bit more playful than this turgid number :(
