Sophie Ellis-Bextor And Adam Lambert Are Flop City In The UK

First up, congrats to Kimberly Wyatt for being the first of the Pussycat Dolls to have a hit since version 1.0 of the stripper pack split up. "Candy," her electro-pop jam with Aggro Santos, debuts this week at #5 on the UK singles chart.

(Meanwhile, how many effing videos are we going to get with glow-in-the-dark colored eyelashes/lipstick this month?)

Alas, one diva who didn't fare as well is Sophie Ellis-Bextor. "Bittersweet," her lead single off forthcoming album Straight To The Heart, goes in at #25, which is her lowest-charting Top 40 hit to date in England. ("Me And My Imagination" previously held the record—it reached #23 three years ago this month.)

Also getting flushed down the flop dumpster is Adam Lambert. Over on the album chart, his For Your Entertainment has a lackluster debut at #36. Last week, the title track entered the singles chart at #39. Geez, if only Glambo had half of the strong female fan base over there that he does here...!

Maybe history will repeat itself across the pond and he'll have better luck with "Whataya Want From Me"?

The U.K. Top 10:

1. "Good Times" - Roll Deep *2 weeks*
2. "OMG" - Usher feat. Will.i.am
3. "She Said" - Plan B
4. "Watercolour" - Pendulum *new*
5. "Candy" - Aggro Santos feat. Kimberly Wyatt *new*
6. "Dirty Picture" - Taio Cruz feat. Ke$ha
7. "Until You Were Gone" - Chipmunk feat. Esmee Denters
8. "Once" - Diana Vickers
9. "I Need You Tonight" - Professor Green feat. Ed Drewett
10. "Acapella" - Kelis

Adam Lambert is still totally unknown in UK, so comparing him to British artists like Sophie Ellis-Bextor is ridiculous. The bottom line is Adam just needs to do enough of the right promo in UK.

I am so upset by the UK'ers. How can they not love Sophie anymore. Bittersweet is a fantastic pop song and is much better than over half of the stuff in the top ten. I feel for the poor girl. She makes amazing music and hasn't been able to catch a break in forever. Her new album is the most anticipated in my book. With that being said it didn't flop to badly, i mean look at Today the Sun's On Us which was just as good or better then Bittersweet.

Adam Lambert is a new artist and this is a *debut* album. On top of that he's an American artist, not a British one, attempting to crossover which is difficult and can take time. His album and single are doing very well in many European and Asian countries as well as Canada with the album going Gold in the US and his single "What Do You Want From Me" going Platinum. Hardly what I would classify as a "flop".

As Adam is a relative unknown in the UK I'd say it's to early to call his CD a flop when it's only recently been released. It needs word of mouth & more radio spins to get out there. Alot of us barely listen to radio anymore since the iPod & so exposure of a new artist is more difficult this day & age unless you've grown w/him as we in US got to do with Adam on American Idol.

  • At 12:24 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Lambert has had "issues" with his popularity since the American Music Awards fiasco. It's no secret that his album is "underperforming" and his label is now releasing his 3rd single in less than 6 months hoping something sticks. The label is sending him out on tour as a Headliner and many of the shows are not selling out which doesn't bode well either since they are in small-to-medium size venues. They were counting on the overseas market to boost sales that are lagging in the US but apparently that isn't happening either. It will be interesting to see how long the Idol Machine and RCA keeps backing this horse.

You are an ignorant idiot. Adam sold over a million copies of "Whataya Want from Me" in USA and the song IS an international hit. His debut Uk single is FYE and it is now #21 on UK itunes. He is the ONLY male Idol alum who is selling well in different countries so get your facts straight. It's obvious that you are just one of those bitter fans of other Idol alums.

  • At 1:56 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Geez, from what I've seen, Adam Lambert concerts have been selling out in 2-10 minutes once tickets go on sale in the US and Canada. Give him some time and he'll have the UK under his spell as well.

"The label is sending him out on tour as a Headliner and many of the shows are not selling out which doesn't bode well either since they are in small-to-medium size venues."

Not selling out? Say what? So you wanna help me get tickets to those "not selling out" shows that you're talking about? Unless they're hiding tickets that I don't know about, I sure can't find the "many" shows that "are not selling out".

  • At 3:28 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Never heard of the "Chart Rigger." Adam's music is climbing all over the world and no flop is predicted in UK. When his single reaches the top 10 there, I'll come back to this site to remind you (if I can remember the name of this site, that is).

oh god, you've woken the glamazons!! Anyway, SEB - so sad that this didn't chart higher. Some UK people still love her Andrew :) I adore her!!

Marina dipped a little this week with the exquisite I Am Not A Robot, but i don't think it's an actual "single release" yet so I am still hopeful!

ps - remember when Felicity was labelled F-lopcity in it's second season, blaming the diving ratings on her chia pet hairdo?! You are the only person i know who loves the show as much as me...

i don't think you know the real deal, what's really going on here. adam lambert is selling out every venue and some are 4,000+ seats.... and they are selling out within minutes. people are clammoring for these seats. paying high premiums to get a ticket to see him, at any cost.

not sure where you got your info but it is wrong. adam is a gold and platinum artist here and in alot of other countries....the uk will catch up, it's only a matter of time. you'll see.

Anonymous @9.24pm. If you can only talk out of your backside, can I suggest you do so in private and not come on blogs spreading malicious falsehoods because you have an agenda with Adam Lambert.

WWFM is a massive hit in the US, Canada and all over Europe.

Adam's tour is also selling out in minutes, as soon as the venues release tickets.

Unfortunately, what you would like to be the case isn't. Sorry for you that Adam is doing just great.

  • At 9:10 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Adam Lambert is just a new artist. #39 is not so bad. And besides, he's AMERICAN, not BRITISH. He's doing well in other countries tho. Soon the whole world will fall for him, you'll see.

HAVE YOU SEEN how many concerts Adam sold so far in 2 to 10 minutes each? That they keep adding concerts and they get sold at same speed? Do you know in how many countries on how many continents Adam's album is platinum and multiplatinum?

ANONIMOUS YOU ARE JUST A LOW CLASS HATER. I think you were waiting since a long time to see a negative article about Adam (because they aren't at all) and now you said "THIS IS MY RIGHT MOMENT FOR HATEING!"

Well you hit it wrong! You have no credibility what so ever!

oh god, you've woken the glamazons!!

I actually don't think you meant this in a snarky way Paul, so I'm not going to go all crazy on you - but allow me to just say that - the thing is - if Lambert fans commented in here it's because the remarks were truly a bit off the mark in some respects. I don't need to elaborate cuz many people already have - but for example, as far as Lambert's concerts - as other have said, they are selling out within minutes. I know, I was fortunate enough to get tickets to a CT/USA show - crappy seats, but I had to take what I could get. So anyway, blah blah blah, but it does get difficult to NOT respond to uninformed comments about Lambert. Lambert fans are okay with legit claims - for example, his "For Your Entertainment" cd probably is under performing in the States a bit (although, in this day and age of pirating/stealing music, which I know a whole group of friends personally who did not pay for their "FYE" music on their iPods but they are all loving it, Lambert is probably lucky to have the sales he got), so anyway, fans don't have a problem (generally, there are crazies w/ all artists) with legit criticism of Lambert's career - but the total garbage is hard to read and not comment in on! Just sayin'

Allow me to drop some glamthrax on many of you: we're not talking about US concerts here, girls. Nor is the UK chart like the US one -- usually when a single and/or album debuts, if it doesn't stick, it drops rather quickly.

"For Your Entertainment" went in at #39 last week in the UK and has dropped.

As for no one hearing of 'American Idol' in the UK -- uh, that's the country that CREATED THE SHOW.

Also, re: Adam being a US artist in the UK, Lady Gaga and Ke$ha crossed over there from the get-go. I'm not knocking Adam in any way, but some folks just cross over and some don't.

Plus, Susan Boyle appeared on 'Britain's Got Talent,' a show that never aired in the States. And look how well *she* did.

Again, this is no commentary on Adam as a person. Just the facts, kids.

I hope this means that Sophie doesn't decide to pack it in now. She's such a captivating performer and it would be a shame for her to retire from the pop music game. To her credit, it would have been easy for the label to shove some rapper onto "Bittersweet" and thankfully that didn't happen.

  • At 1:35 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

HEY YOU ALL ABOVE: If the UK is not ready for Adam Lambert, the rest of the planet IS. He's been touring in Australia, Singapore, Germany, Japan, Finland, Canada, Switzerland, Netherlands, Finland, Sweden and, oh! yes, made the Jonathan Ross show the other night (actor Jake Gyllenhaal was also a guest on that show).

Everywhere Adam goes, people line up to see him in person. He is the real thing and is currently preparing his GLAM NATION TOUR across America (some 40 stops already and more could be added).

If the UK doesn't want to join in this great phenomenon, so be it. We sure are!!!

By the way, why believe this ONE blogger?? Just go check for yourselves the almost 50,000 videos pertaining to Adam Lambert, star.

Attention glamazons- you are not actually arguing with the information provided in this blog. Adam Lambert's single has NOT been initially successful in the UK. It DID chart at 36, then down to 39. And, if he had the strong female fan base he has in the US over in the UK, this probably would not have happened. Everything- hard facts. No character assasination. He is obviously a successful artist, and no one is claiming otherwise (except 9:24- which rock is that moron's head under?) So everyone just calm down- his UK single and marketing were just... not right. No one's fault (except maybe the labels), nothing to fret over. Maybe Lambert just has too much Americanness?

The IMPORTANT thing here is that Sophie, an well-established British singer who didn't win a reality show, flopped with one of the best things she has ever done ever. :( Somebody cry with me.

"...we're not talking about US concerts here..."

To D'luv - a person who commented in (9:24 I think) mentioned the poor concert sales... we readers REALIZE it wasn't mentioned in the original article/snippet (and the concert related comment was very inaccurate). And actually, thank you for your informative comments - I for one was very interested in your comments.... again, many Lambert fans are very open to fair representation of elements of Lambert's career, even if they're less than positive. Too bad you opened up your own comments with a sort of snarky tone when you said "Allow me to drop some glamthrax on many of you: we're not talking about US concerts here, girls..." - you may have lost some people who would have otherwise really listened to your very valid points... that's the think you snarky people don't seem to realize. I do appreciate that you followed up with a few comments saying that you weren't knocking Adam and you were just citing the facts etc. - I get that - but you sort of started out snarky right off the bat and it's too bad cuz you really had some interesting and valid points... and then you questioned and snarked about the "concert" business - well obviously YOU didn't read through everything carefully cuz the other commenters/posters were well aware of the fact that the original article didn't mentioned the concert element, they were just responding to another poster's comments. Well, I hope you didn't totally blow your credibility and I hope people, especially Lambert fans, gave your comments a fair read and didn't get immediately turned off, cuz, again, I for one was educated by your comments. And as an aside - I have a question for everyone - as far as crossing over - LaRoux's "Bulletproof" has been out forever and is only know just getting recognized on a large scale in the US...is it really accurate and a legit representation to say that Lambert's "FYE" single is considered a lost cause? I'm genuinely asking? D'luv mentioned a quick tidbit about how the UK charts work, and that was informative, but I'd really love to hear other people's take on the matter?!

  • At 2:35 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

@11:09 AM, Anonymous who said "Attention glamazons- you are not actually arguing with the information provided in this blog..." - refer to comments by Anon 11:23AM - you are right, some people were just commenting on 9:24's foolish comments, that's all. The rest of your comments were interesting!

Adam's concerts not selling ??? this is the most ridiculous nonfactual statement I have ever heard ! Glamazons, Lambashers, I think there's one thing we can all agree on: Glambert is flizopping faster than Mary Lou Retton on speed to the bottom of the world's charts because he has no talent. Well, no talent other than shrieking like a sequined parrot who's being raped.

Glamazons, face the wicked truth: he will never stick it in you!

Being a Brit myself I'm disappointed at the lack of publicity Adam has been given over here. Considering Simon Fuller is his manager i'm surprised at the lack of exposure he's been given. I can re-call only 3 TV appearances non of them on prime-time and even though he was on Jonathon Ross (our equivalent of Jay Leno) he did not sing! Granted i know his visit to the UK was delayed by the volcanic ash cloud grounding all flights but even so i'm sure he could have been pushed harder.
