The Saturdays Are Super Classy Broads

I have to admit, that last album from The Saturdays was such unbelievable shit that I went off them real quick. Which was a shame, since I was totally into Chasing Lights for a stretch in late 2008 and early 2009.

And so I barely paid attention to "Missing You," the first single off the Sats' upcoming third album Headlines—mostly because the day the video premiered a week or two back, it wasn't able to be viewed in the U.S. Fuck that shit.

However, the broads performed the song for the first time live at T4 On The Beach on Sunday, though member Mollie King had to sit the gig out because she got bit by a horsefly and is on crutches. Which is so classy that now I'm kind of back into these strippers again.

I really want to like this track, but it just doesn't come together for me. If you want to do the vocoder and the drum machines, bring the tempo back. Seems like a missed opportunity to do something with a more lush sound, but then it wouldn't have been a pop single, either.

The Saturday's debut album had some good songs. But I couldn't help but feel like they were just Girls aloud with a couple of mixed raced girls and members who can all hold a tune. As opposed to Girls aloud whose songs always hinge off of Nadine's vocals and the Mirando Cooper penned nonsense.

All UK girl groups look and sound the same now. Even the Sugababes are looking / sounding no different / better from these other bitches, and once upon a time when Mutya was in the group and the Sugababes were looking like your average girls on the council estate: their music used to be the cream of the crop and what managers and A&R's wanted their girl groups to sound like. My how the mighty weave pieces and hair extensions have fallen.

Did one of those hoes really git bit by a horsefly?!?!

PS I LOVE Saturdays. :| Their harmonies seem to be a bit off though - could it be the missing Ms. King?

John, it could have gone either way after that intro - fast dance-pop track or drama-tinged ballad. Unfortunately....

Random J, yes, UK pop weavedom has never truly recovered post-Taller In More Ways, has it? Funny, TLC's "Unpretty" came up on shuffle on my iPod yesterday, and I just chuckled and thought about the 'babes blatantly knockin' that jam off with "Ugly."

Joshua, yes. And I'm sure it must be the absence of Mollie's stunning power chirp.

It won't have effect in actual fact, that's what I suppose.
