WTF: Lady Gaga's "The Edge Of Glory" Video

Oh, good — Lady Gaga's finally reached that point where she'll chuck out boring, trite swill with a half-assed concept and expect the world to collectively Rabbit itself into a frenzy.

Take, for example, her "The Edge Of Glory" music video, which co-stars sax man Clarence Clemons and features the Gaga strutting around in some leather strappy number on what looks like a cheap set on the Paramount lot.

Word on the street is that Joseph Kahn (Kylie's "All The Lovers," Britney's "Toxic," Backstreet Boys' "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)") was axed after originally being announced as the director for this vid.

But, honestly, it now just plays like a clip by an artist who scrambled to make a video because they had money invested, the time booked and a few hours to kill.

Lady Gaga, hon, it's time to pull the saxophone out of your ass, take a month-long vacation and recharge the ol' batteries. This is the fourth utter shit video in a row (I'm including "Alejandro"), and, quite frankly, Katy Perry is kicking your ass in this department.

A monster of a fail.

There's just one word for this: disappointing. And yes, like you said, it's nothing compared to "Last Friday Night" by Katy Perry.

Did Lady Gaga pull a Britney Spears, where she was like "Well, they didn't like the story from my last video, so I just won't have one this time"? Because, honestly, that's a horrible idea for the woman who's supposed to be the queen of music videos.

How could you talk about the video and Clarence Clemons, and not mention that The Big Man himself just suffered a stroke?

    Here's hoping he recovers.

I'll be blasting "You Are A Friend Of Mine" in his honour.

Fuck Joseph Kahn with a paintbrush! The vid suxxx but then again so did the clip for "All The Lovers."

It should have just been a tight shot of Madonna's face as someone read her recent sales numbers aloud.

This song is about when you are having sex just by the edge of your bed, that happened once to gaga and she was wondering if she should keep on or stop, she kept on and realized all her dreams became true, so, next time you´re by the edge of glory learn the lesson.

As much as I loathe Katy Perry's music, it pains me to say that her recent video is miles ahead of what Gaga came up with here. That being said, I think Alejandro, Born This Way, and Judas had their moments. I get the feeling that she must have felt her other recent vids missed the mark because there was too much going on and not enough focus, and has gone a little too far now the literal route.

The problem with the video seems to be the editing more than anything else...it just doesn't make sense. That was also the problem with the other three vids--Alejandro needed to be shorter, Born This Way needed to cut the shoeless dance sequence, and Judas needed more of the interesting bits and less of the rest (the dance sequence was too jittery and abstract).

I like Popjustice's idea of digitally inserting other people later in the Edge of Glory video so you could have the option to create your own Gaga-verse. Other than quicker cuts and more close-ups, I can't think of what else could save this video...a story, perhaps?

As much as I'd like to think Gaga was to blame, I think Joseph Kahn -- judging from his drama queen-line tweet -- had a large part to play in this fiasco. IIRC, this happened with Kelly Clarkson's "Already Gone" video. He was apparently supposed to direct a really intricate-looking clip; in the end, it was a lame, cheap video of Kelly writhing around on a couch. She did indicate her anger about the clip, just as the comparisons of the song with Beyonce's track came to light.
