'Steps Reunion': Watch Episode 2

The first episode of Steps Reunion was all about bringing fans of the pop act up to speed on the individual members' lives, following their nasty (and who knew is was this nasty?!) split in December 2001.

But part two of the four-part series jumps straight into the drama, with Claire Richards, Faye Tozer, Ian "H" Watkins, Lee Latchford-Evans and Lisa Scott-Lee sitting down at a table together to air all their grievances with each other.

Faye is surprisingly relentless in grilling H and Claire on why they left the band. She doesn't let the excuse of "I was tired" and "we wanted normal lives" slide, either.  "Yeah, you said you needed a break and you were tired, but you were ready to go on [as a duo] with Claire," Faye shoots back.

Lisa jumps in by saying, "Because you guys came out so soon afterwards it felt — it was apparent — that this had been planned, you know, a lot longer than two weeks before. Because there you were with a new single, a new video, a new album."

H claims he can't remember much about it, because it was all "a blur," but Faye confronts them again, saying that as she carried on recording music, she would talk to writers and producers who admitted they had been writing for H and Claire before Steps even split up.

Steps fell apart in December 2001, after H and Claire handed the other three resignation letters on the night of their final Gold Tour concert date in Manchester. By March 2002, the pair's single "DJ" had been released and charted at #3 in the UK.

Interestingly, Faye later asks, "What happened to the 'give everybody three months warning' that was in our group agreement?" Claire tries to say, "Well, but that's different, isn't it...?" Faye cuts her off: "Well, it is to you, because you managed to be able to do it!"

Despite the tension, the girls go off to Spain together for a vacation to try to bond, while Lee drives up from London to H's house in Wales for a weekend  to finally get to know him as a person and, possibly, as a friend.

Three poignant moments at the end of the episode:

1. Faye cites "Deeper Shade Of Blue" as a good video to look at if they all decide to return to the pop scene. ("It would be really fun to play with something like that — I think that's exactly where we should be.") She seems to indicate that their later music — what she refers to as "edgy dance cheese"— is a good reference point. Smart cookie.

2. Claire pipes up and says to the other girls that they need a "Patience" — i.e. Take That's 2006 comeback single after the man band's own 10-year break.

3. Lisa says she worked with Gary Barlow pre-Take That 2.0 while making her solo album: "I could just call him up and say, 'Hi! Remember me?'" Well, Lisa, he's written for Matt Cardle. The only way is up at this point.

All in all, good stuff. And ending with "Better Best Forgotten" was fucking perfect. The likelihood of new material from Steps is seeming more and more like it could happen.

I hate you Robbie for getting me addicted to this trash. Even after hearing it repeated a billion times "Steps had sold over 14 million album before the group suddenly split up" I was glued to see which seedy details about the inner turmoil would be revealed. I almost regret selling off my steps collection, almost.

I think Lisa Scott-Lee must have pissed off the cameramen at some point because they manage to shoot her at every possible unflattering angle.

Robbie, I love your blog and usually find your taste right on the money, but there's one thing I don't understand.

What's your friggin' obsession with Steps?

They were a manufactured pop group who had most of their success covering other people's material. I could overlook this if they made some kind of cultural impact, but I can't see that either. Please explain!

That was absolutely riveting. H's redemption arc moved me beyond words and Lisa's tenuous hold on sanity concerns me.

I need to know what happens next!?!? ARE THEY REUNITING?!?!?!?

Jump!, you love me and it's the best thing that has ever happened to you life. How DARE you sell your Steps collection? I busted mine out the other day for my new Twitter profile background.

Patrick, well, she's been on enough reality shows at this point. I'm sure she's on some camera crew shit list.

Anonymous 1, first of all, you thought I had taste?!? Two, I've been a Steps stan since 1998, and have posted about them here for years. Third, they did about 5 covers that became singles, and some of those were only tacked on as double A-sides. Fourth, #1 on iTunes this week, so I'm the only one. Five, six, seven, eight - xoxoxoxo

    Anonymous 2, DITTO!

Joshua, by now you have your answer :)

I wonder if the other three ever thought about suing H & Claire for breach of contract by not giving three months' notice? Or given that Tim Byrne appeared to be the mastermind behind the split, do you think he would have found an way to get out of it?

I think Lisa is an absolute cow when the girls were in Spain you could see how uncomfortable Claire was she knew they were only tolerating her and it obviously was always like that at the end of the day Claire had the talent h had the personality which landed them the Brittany spears gig and the others were fillers which is fine every group needs them but they need to get over it and just be happy they made millions out of it. Lisa and faye are sneaky and I feel sorry for claire. Lee at least seems honest and genuine.

what an interesting idea for a series but is anyone else annoyed with the constant repeating of certain lines over and over again??- What gives? Did they not have enough material to fill the show?
Also, the band need to face up to the fact that Claire got given the most vocals because she's the most talented out of them all. a tough fact but they need to face it. instead of being grateful to her for making them a success and several million pounds in the process, its ridiculous theyre all giving her such a hard time.
