UK Chart Roundup: Example's "One More Day (Stay With Me)" Should Have Been #1

So the trend now for utterly shit dance tracks seems to be to come up with over the top music videos that at least give something about the entire thing a shred of allure. (See: DJ Snake and Lil Jon's "Turn Down For What.") And the latest is Oliver Heldens and Becky Hill's "Gecky (Overdrive)", which is the new #1 single in the UK, and just so happens to have killed the lengthy streak of decent floorfillers to have topped the British chart in 2014.

Actually, Ella Henderson's "Ghost," the #1 song the previous two weeks, killed the streak of floorfillers. But at least that was a good track.

Pity then that Example's surprising '90s house throwback "One More Day (Stay With Me)" didn't make it to the top instead. I've become quite addicted to it in the past week (and fear I may have subsequently cursed it). Collaborating with Calvin Harris and Pet Shop Boys must have rubbed off on him.

"One More Day (Stay With Me)" goes in at #4.

The UK Top 10:

1. "Gecko (Overdrive)" - Oliver Heldens x Becky Hill *1 week*
2. "Ghost" - Ella Henderson
3. "Sing" - Ed Sheeran
4. "One More Day (Stay With Me)" - Example *new*
5. "Budapest" - George Ezra
6. "Stay With Me" - Sam Smith
7. "Waves" (Robin Schulz Remix) - Mr Probz
8. "Wiggle" - Jason Derulo feat. Snoop Dogg
9. "All Of Me" - John Legend
10. "Good Kisser" - Usher *new*

Do you think John Newman is burnt to fucking hell that Sam Smith swooped in and ate his lunch? These are the things I spent far too much time thinking about. Life is one fuck-over moment after another, really.

UK Chart Roundup: Gorgon Sexy

I really can't wait until Gorgon City put out their debut album (in September), because they're one of the more exciting dance acts putting out music in 2014. Plus, I'd totally bang the blonde guy with the scruff.

Anyway, their latest, the Laura Welsh-featuring "Here For You," debuts at #7 in the UK this week.

The UK Top 10:

1. "Ghost" - Ella Henderson *1 week*
2. "Don't Stop" - 5 Seconds Of Summer *new*

Coldplay Hit The Sydney Streets In Their Super Cute "A Sky Full Of Stars" Video

"A Sky Full Of Stars" is probably Coldplay's most blatant foray away from rock and into dance territory (hey, kids — EDM's hot right now, no?), but I don't care. It's a great song, and it reminds me of my trip to Italy last month. Sigh.

Chris Martin, that hot piece of ass Guy Berryman and those other two guys shot the video JUST THIS PAST TUESDAY (!) on the streets of Sydney. (How very U2 "Where The Streets Have No Name" of them.) Watch the band mingle with the common folk below.

US Chart Roundup: Clean Bandit's #97 Triumph!

Well, well, well. No sooner does my classy interview with UK beats 'n' violins troupe Clean Bandit go online than they finally crack the Billboard Hot 100 with their European smash "Rather Be"...at the soaring height of #97! The US is about the only country the song hadn't quite hit yet, so set off a few firecrackers and start twerking in celebration, chyldryn!

It's a big week for Brits on the chart, as "Problem" featuree Charli XCX climbs into the Top 40 for the first time as a lead artist, with "Boom Clap." The synthy Fault In Our Stars soundtrack is up to #29.

Ahead of Charli, Disclosure and Sam Smith's "Latch" reaches a new high of #14. Only a few more chart positions to go before the house jam both surpasses the #11 peak the single had in the UK and gives Smith a second Top 10 hit in the States. Well, holy fuck.

The U.S. Top 10:

1. "Fancy" - Iggy Azalea feat. Charli XCX *4 weeks*
2. "Problem" - Ariana Grande feat. Iggy Azalea
3. "Rude" - MAGIC!
4. "All Of Me" - John Legend
5. "Wiggle" - Jason Derulo feat. Snoop Dogg
6. "Turn Down For What" - DJ Snake & Lil Jon
7. "Am I Wrong" - Nico & Vinz

10. "Stay With Me" - Sam Smith

My Clean Bandit Interview For Idolator

"Rather Be" dance troupe Clean Bandit's saw the stateside release of their LP New Eyes this week. I had a one-on-one with the band's Neil Amin-Smith in late April, part of which was published in the June issue of Instinct (on sale now!), and the other half of which you can catch now on Idolator.

I promise, there's never a dull moment in either piece of classy journalism.

UK Chart Roundup: "Ghost" Says Boo

This "Ghost" song by Ella Henderson (co-written/co-produced by Ryan Tedder) sounds better upon a second listen. And after playing it a third time, it has the feel of a song that might just become very, very huge over the next few months.

1. "Ghost" - Ella Henderson *new* *1 week*
2. "Sing" - Ed Sheeran
3. "Wasted" - Tiesto feat. Matthew Koma *new*

Kiesza Follows Up "Hideaway" With Fantasatic New Single "Giant In My Heart": Listen

Well, the "Hideaway" cash must've started rolling in, because Kiesza's new single "Giant In My Heart" sounds much fuller and more lush, production-wise, by comparison. Don't get me wrong — I absolutely love "Hideaway" and think it's not only one of the best songs to come out of 2014, but of the past several years, as well. I'm just glad to hear that Kiesza is not only sticking with the retro house sound (for the time being at least) that made her first hit such a smash.

You can evolve later, doll. For now, let's stick with 1993.

US Chart Roundup: It's A Sam Smith World...

Iggy Azalea and Charli XCX hold down the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for a third week with "Fancy," while Charli finally lands a chart hit all by her lonesome with "Boom Clap." Her contribution to the Fault In Our Stars soundtrack, the song goes in at #62.

Also staying put this week is Calvin Harris at #9 with his highest-charting US hit to date, "Summer." More people should be buying that song rather than finger-jamming themselves over "Fancy" and "Problem," if you ask me. Oh, wait — what was that about finger-jamming?

Just below Calvin, at #10, Sam Smith scores his first Top 10 single, stateside, with "Stay With Me." Meanwhile, Disclosure earn their first Top 20 hit (at #17) with "Latch," a song that features Smith on vocals.

Isn't it funny how that works?

The U.S. Top 10:

1. "Fancy" - Iggy Azalea feat. Charli XCX *3 weeks*
2. "Problem" - Ariana Grande feat. Iggy Azalea
3. "All Of Me" - John Legend
4. "Turn Down For What" - DJ Snake & Lil Jon
5. "Wiggle" - Jason Derulo feat. Snoop Dogg
6. "Happy" - Pharrell Williams
7. "Rude" - MAGIC!
8. "Am I Wrong" - Nico & Vinz
9. "Summer" - Calvin Harris
10. "Stay With Me" - Sam Smith

Nicki MInaj Takes Out Her Cans In Her Boring "Pills N Potions" Video

This broad's career is veering dangerously toward Lady "No One Cares Anymore" Gaga territory, and the snoozy video for the limp "Pills N Potions" doesn't help. Nicki probably realized that during the shoot, and so out come the boobs!

Nicole Scherzinger's "Your Love" Video Is Bargain Basement Garbage

...but at least the song's still good, right?

It's PSY & Snoop Dogg's "Hangover" Video

I don't know why, but I found this utter trash to be highly amusing — particularly the part where PSY and Snoop Dogg go skipping down the street with the two middle-aged broads (pictured above) they pick up while getting wasted.

I couldn't remember a single line from the song itself to save my life, but the video is a total winner.

Calvin Harris Announces John Newman-Featuring Single "Blame"

Just when you thought Sam Smith had ripped John Newman's wig off and flushed it down the chute that goes straight to the bottom reaches of the flop chopper, here comes this news...

UK Chart Roundup: Ed Sheeran Lands First #1 Single With "Sing"

Inevitably, Ed Sheeran's "Sing" has shot straight into the UK singles chart at #1, giving the ginger-wigged crooner his first chart topper in his home country and thus extending co-writer/producer Pharrell Williams' domination over the ears of the masses. (Doesn't it feel like this song has already been around for like six months?) It's the only new entry in the Top 10 this week, and everything else down below is basically a shuffling of the usual suspects with a few minor singles making their first appearances in the nether reaches.

So hoo-ray for "Sing"...which I still maintain is a Rolling Stones/Maroon 5/Xtina knockoff.

The UK Top 10:

1. "Sing" - Ed Sheeran *new* *1 week*
2. "Stay With Me" - Sam Smith
3. "I Wanna Feel" - SecondCity
4. "Waves (Robin Shulz Remix)" - Mr Probz
5. "All Of Me" - John Legend
6. "Jubel" - Klingande
7. "I Will Never Let You Down" - Rita Ora
8. "Dangerous Love" - Fuse ODG feat. Sean Paul
9. "Wiggle" - Jason Derulo feat. Snoop Dogg
10. "Only Love Can Hurt Like This" - Paloma Faith

US Chart Roundup: Major, Vulgar Sex With Shirtless, Naked Calvin Harris

This calls for a shirtless Calvin Harris pic or three! The 30-year-old Scottish electro-stud's "Summer" jumps up to #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week and becomes his third Top 10 hit, stateside, in the process (after his and Rihanna's chart-topping "We Found Love" in 2011 and last year's #10-peaking pair-up with Florence Welch, "Sweet Nothing").

That means "Summer" is now his highest charting hit in the US as a lead artist. So far, the only other single of Harris' to make the Hot 100 that doesn't contain another featured artist is "Feel So Close," which peaked at #12 in 2012. It was also his first chart hit in the States.

"Summer" is now Calvin's sixth single to make the Hot 100. Annoyingly, the only one of those to miss the Top 40 (or the Top 20, for that matter) altogether is my favorite of his, the Ayah Marar-featuring "Thinking About You," which stalled at #86 earlier this year.

Anyway, I always knew my boo would make it over here, ever since I bought his first album on import back in 2007 and we started having frequent sex in my dreams that involved the backseats of cars, peanut butter, salsa, crowbars, a leaf blower, three bungee cords and a Real Girl doll with its legs sawed off.

It was a lot of sex.

The U.S. Top 10:

1. "Fancy" - Iggy Azalea feat. Charli XCX *2 weeks*
2. "Problem" - Ariana Grande feat. Iggy Azalea
3. "All Of Me" - John Legend
4. "Turn Down For What" - DJ Snake & Lil Jon
5. "Happy" - Pharrell Williams
6. "Am I Wrong" - Nico & Vinz
7. "Dark Horse" - Katy Perry feat. Juicy J
8. "Rude" - MAGIC!
9. "Summer" - Calvin Harris
10. "Wiggle" - Jason Derulo feat. Snoop Dogg
